Episode 9: Bali Horror Stories: I Almost Died & We Found a Man Bleeding on the Road I thought this was going to be a relaxing three-week Bali holiday with Jack and Penelope. It absolutely was not. In this episode of Bite Hard, I’m telling you about the two Bali experiences from 2023 that I still think about - and honestly, still have nightmares about. The first started with some questionable fish and ended with me collapsing in a bathroom, losing consciousness, having multiple convulsions and being completely unable to control my body. Jack was desperately trying to get help while we waited for an ambulance that never came. We eventually had to find another way to get me to hospital, where I discovered I had a parasite from contaminated food or water. But that was only horror story number one. Days later, Jack, Penelope and I came across a seriously injured man lying on the side of the road after a moped accident. While people were driving past, we stopped to help. What followed became a frantic search to identify him, find his family and get the hospital the information they needed to treat him. With the help of strangers, our followers and the American embassy, we eventually managed to track down his family. We later found out that he survived. It was one of those completely surreal experiences where you leave a holiday thinking, what the actual fuck just happened? I also share a few things I learnt from those experiences about travelling, emergencies and being prepared overseas. And then, because apparently Bali wasn't finished with me… We jump forward to two months ago, when Jack surprised me with a girls' trip to Bali for Mother's Day. Flights booked. Visa sorted. Excited for a holiday. Except there was one tiny problem… My passport was less than six months from expiry. And suddenly, the surprise trip Jack had planned couldn't happen. In this episode of Bite Hard, I’m getting very honest about friendship, rejection, loneliness, social anxiety and the weird reality of trying to find your people as an adult. We start with influencers - the ones who preach “girls supporting girls” online but can barely acknowledge you in real life. I share an experience that still gets under my skin, and unpack why subtle rejection can hurt just as much as the obvious kind. But honestly, this episode isn’t really about influencers. It’s about belonging. It’s about being the person who always says hello first, wondering whether you’re too much, questioning why everyone else seems to have their group while you’re still trying to find yours. I talk about growing up feeling like I needed to change my personality to fit in, going to three schools, being told to adjust my behaviour, and what happens when you finally decide you’d rather be fully yourself than accepted for a watered-down version of you. We also get into the infamous social media unfollow purge — including the 300+ people I eventually removed from my life online - and the strange mix of relief and sadness that came with letting go of people I secretly hoped would accept me one day. I definitely don't have friendship figured out. But I’m learning that wanting connection doesn't make you needy, being rejected doesn't make you unlikable, and not having your "people" yet doesn't mean you never will. Maybe we're not behind. Maybe we're just still searching. And if you've ever walked away from a room wondering “what is wrong with me?” - I hope this episode makes you feel a little less alone. No fake niceness. The messy, exhausting, sometimes completely irrational version where you can feel confident one day and then see yourself in bad lighting and suddenly question everything. In this episode of Bite Hard, I’m getting brutally honest about my relationship with acne, confidence, social media, pregnancy, postpartum and the pressure we put on ourselves to look a certain way. I talk about years of struggling with hormonal acne, how much it affected the way I saw myself, cancelling plans, obsessing over mirrors and wondering whether people were listening to me or staring at my skin. I also unpack what it was like going on reality TV while my skin was at its worst — and the unexpected way that being vulnerable about it actually connected me with other women. Then there’s Roaccutane, clearing my skin, and the strange realisation that came with being treated differently once my appearance changed. And pregnancy? That brought a whole new level of body-image chaos. Feeling completely out of control in a body that was changing every day, dealing with comments from other people, and struggling with the pressure to somehow feel grateful while also not feeling like myself. We also get into postpartum, the obsession with “bouncing back”, wanting to lose weight without feeling guilty for wanting it, and how exercise eventually became less about shrinking my body and more about reconnecting with it. This isn’t an episode about suddenly learning to love every inch of yourself. It’s about accepting that body image can be complicated, that some days will be harder than others, and that you don’t have to look perfect to be worthy of love, confidence, desire or space.
