    The Fire at League Line Road: The Murder of Laura Marie Purchase

    At approximately 3 a.m. on March 17th, 1983, a Montgomery County Sheriff's deputy saw a fire burning in woods beside Interstate 45 near League Line Road. Inside the flames was the body of an unidentified woman. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Three years later, fingerprints finally gave investigators her name: Laura Marie Purchase. By then, investigators believed they already knew who killed her. Henry Lee Lucas had confessed—and was convicted. But decades later, DNA proved Lucas hadn't done it. Montgomery County detectives reopened the case, eventually turning to investigative genetic genealogy. In 2021, the evidence led them to 75-year-old Thomas Elvin Darnell in Kansas City, Kansas. His DNA matched the unknown male profile recovered from Laura's body, according to investigators. Darnell was arrested and charged with capital murder—but died in custody before he could stand trial.     The Fire In The Pines: The Murder of Laura Jean Donez

    Laura Jean Donez was sixteen years old when she left her Houston home, reportedly to buy a hamburger at a nearby restaurant. She never returned. On April 18th, 1983, an oilfield worker spotted a fire burning in woods approximately seven miles north of Montgomery, Texas. Inside the fire was the body of an unidentified young woman. She was soon identified as Laura. Investigators determined she had been strangled and that someone had apparently used a road flare to set the fire. Months later, confessed serial killer Henry Lee Lucas came to Montgomery County—and reportedly led investigators back to the location where Laura's body had been found. Lucas confessed. A grand jury indicted him. But Lucas also confessed to hundreds of murders, many of which he could not possibly have committed. And today, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office still lists Laura's murder as unsolved.     On October 2nd, 1982, Gloria Ann Stephan was last seen at a convenience store in the Houston area. Approximately four hours later, her body was discovered in a gravel pit off Alford Road near Magnolia, Texas. She had been strangled and stabbed. Her light-blue Plymouth station wagon was nowhere nearby. At approximately one o'clock the following morning, a Texas DPS trooper found it abandoned along Highway 290 near Kerrville—hundreds of miles away. Then, almost a year later, confessed serial killer Henry Lee Lucas came to Montgomery County. Lucas claimed he murdered Gloria.
