The science reshaping human performance | Heat, recovery & creating a new category | Craig Gile
In this episode of the Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO Conversations, I connected with Craig Gile, Founder, President and Chairman of Arteria Technology, the company behind CoolMitt™, for a conversation bringing together revolutionary science, human performance, career arcs, entrepreneurship and how we regulate ourselves under pressure. Craig’s career has unfolded through several critical inflection points, from flying jets from aircraft carriers in the US Navy, to Wall Street, then entrepreneurship commercialising thermoregulation science developed at Stanford. Each chapter demanded a different way of thinking, adapting and performing under pressure. The science behind CoolMitt challenged much of what I assumed about cooling the body. Stanford researchers discovered specialised vascular structures in areas including the palms that help dissipate heat. CoolMitt works with that biology to accelerate heat transfer and cool the body from within. Originally funded through DARPA for military applications, the technology is now being used across professional sport, military training and demanding workplaces. We talked about Active Recovery not as something we do once depleted, but as something integrated into performance itself. Cooling for short periods can help remove accumulating heat rather than simply pushing until there is nothing left in the tank. Craig is also creating an entirely new category. Revolutionary science still has to become a viable business, requiring education, execution and patience when reality does not follow the original plan. “Have a sound thought through strategy and just recognize it’s never gonna go exactly like that. So be ready to pivot as necessary, but with a sound reason.” That connected with how I think about shape shifting in business: holding onto what remains true while reshaping what needs to change. Whether we are talking about our bodies, performance or business, pushing harder does not always enable better performance. Regulation and recovery can be part of the performance itself. THE SHAPE SHIFT IN MOTION What changes when recovery becomes part of performance rather than something we wait to need? Through the Bee Formless™ methodology, this is how I saw the shift unfold: LEARN: DIAGNOSE • UNDERSTAND • SUBTRACT • CHALLENGE ✨ Challenge the assumption that harder and longer always means better performance. ✨ Diagnose where depletion is being treated as the cost of high performance. UNLEARN: REIMAGINE • RESHAPE • CREATE ✨ Reimagine recovery as something active and integrated into performance. ✨ Reshape cooling around how the body naturally regulates heat. RELEARN: TEST • IMPLEMENT • EMBODY ✨ Build, test and learn from the people using the innovation. ✨ Pivot when evidence calls for it without abandoning a sound strategy too quickly. ACTIVE RECOVERY: INTEGRATE • RESTORE • EVOLVE ✨ Where are you continuing to push when regulation might improve performance? ✨ What changes when recovery happens before complete depletion? 🔗 https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-gile-04286614/ 🌐 https://www.coolmitt.com/ 📱 @realcoolmitt 💭 Where could Active Recovery ensure you perform better rather than push harder?
