Ep 57: Paradigms, Pathologization, & Possibilities (with Prof. Tony Attwood & Dr. Michelle Garnett)

In this episode, Kara, Bruce, and Maja talk to Prof. Tony Attwood and Dr. Michelle Garnett about each of their journeys with late diagnosis, the role of autistic friendships in self-acceptance, and the impact of discovery on clinical practice (and vice versa). We talk about normalizing spaces, paradigm shifts, and epistemic injustice, as well as connecting to our own nervous systems and autistic joys. (Note: recorded in March 2026 just weeks after Tony revealed his discovery and after recent comments by Uta Frith on her changed beliefs on the idea of a spectrum and denial of high-masking presentations). Guest Bios: Professor Tony Attwood has worked for more than 50 years as a clinical psychologist and is one of the world’s foremost specialists on Autism. Currently serving as an adjunct Professor at Griffith University in Queensland, Tony's impact has enriched the global understanding of autism. Alongside Dr Michelle Garnett, Tony co-founded Attwood & Garnett Events in 2019, driven by the shared goal of enhancing autism awareness and understanding. Their shared vision seeks to reshape the narrative surrounding autism to create a world where autism is embraced, and the diverse strengths, talents, and perspectives of autistic individuals are celebrated. Dr Michelle Garnett PhD is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in autism for more than 30 years as a clinician, clinic director, author, presenter and researcher. Alongside Tony Attwood she co-founded Attwood & Garnett Events to enhance autism awareness globally. She has co-authored nine books on autism and many peer-reviewed journal articles. She has been an invited keynote speaker and conference presenter internationally for over two decades. Dr Garnett is autistic and has ADHD, late diagnosed. Kara and Bruce talk with Dr. Paula Holmes-Rodman, who developed a self-advocacy guide for autistic cancer patients together with her sister, Lindsey Holmes, who was an autistic cancer patient. We talk about Lindsey’s memory, consent and autonomy in medical care, neurohumility, as well as Paula’s earlier work as an anthropologist. Build a bigger boat! Guest Bio: Dr. Paula Elizabeth Holmes-Rodman is a multidisciplinary scholar, writer, and facilitator whose work bridges interpretive anthropology, narrative-based medicine, and patient advocacy. With a PhD in Religious Studies from McMaster University and postdoctoral training in Anthropology at SUNY Buffalo, she has spent over two decades exploring postcolonial Indigenous identities, ethnotheology, and narrative repatriation, grounding her scholarship in practices of reclamation and narrative justice. Her recent Advanced Certificate in Narrative-Based Medicine from the University of Toronto reflects an applied turn toward clinical and community settings. Working closely with Autism Canada, she co-developed the Self-Advocacy Guide for Cancer Patients on the Autism Spectrum, a resource recognized with the King Charles III Coronation Medal. She continues to collaborate with organizations such as Ovarian Cancer Canada, Hospice Calgary, and Wellspring to support equitable, story-based care through workshops, guides, and webinar series. Her publications span academic and public-facing platforms—including Intima, Ars Medica, and Anthropologica—and address end-of-life narratives, autism and cancer, and Indigenous ethnohistory. She has presented nationally on psychosocial oncology, health humanities, and patient navigation, and contributed to the development of advocacy programs. Her work blends scholarly inquiry with collaborative engagement, offering frameworks for listening, legacy-making, and resilience across medical and cultural borders. In both institutional and grassroots spaces, her approach emphasizes relationality, co-authorship, and the transformative possibilities of story.Thing(s) of the Day: Self Advocacy Guide for Cancer Patients on the Autism Spectrum (being revised - this is the original) The Lindsey Interview Project Paula Holmes-Rodman Interview ____________________________ Autistic Tidbits & Tangents is a biweekly podcast, co-hosted by Kara Dymond, Bruce Petherick, & Maja Toudal, centered around topics relevant to autism and the lives of autistic people. Ep. 48 - Intuition, Improvisation, & Indigenous Knowledge-Keeping (with Julianna Maggrah)

Bruce and Kara chat with Julianna Maggrah about Indigenous ways of being, doing, and knowing; her late diagnosis; exploring Indigenous views of autism; thoughts on creativity and expression; and the interplay of all of these topics, together. Guest Bio: Julianna Maggrah is a 2 Spirit, neurodivergent Indigenous woman born and raised in northern Saskatchewan. Her family were trappers and hunters and loved to live off of the land, and so Julianna was born with a connection to the land. Although she can’t stand the idea of setting traps or hunting, she connects to the land by picking medicines and taking her dog out to roam the forest. Rather than saying she is from the north, Julianna would prefer to say that she is from the land and the stars as her connection is to the spirit of the earth and not a town or city. As an Indigenous person, she grew up experiencing the effects of generational trauma, which led her to discover the importance of mental health and understanding one’s mind and experiences. She is an advocate for mental health and has made a short documentary about her own struggles with depression and anxiety and has worked with the CBC Creator Network to make mini documentaries about her 2 Spirit journey, searching for her culture, and a guided mindfulness meditation in the forest. Most recently, Julianna wrote an article for CBC about how learning about Indigenous perspectives on autism helped her accept her autism diagnosis. Julianna studied media arts production at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and interned at MBC radio. Shortly after finishing school, she got a job as a video journalist at CTV. She realized she could combine her desire to help people with her love for creativity and art, and now creates content about subjects that she feels are important. In 2022, Julianna was selected for CBC and NSI’s New Indigenous Voices Program and she received the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Medal for her work creating an open space for mental health online. In 2023 she placed second in Red Nation Media’s Native Women Write Pitch Competition. In 2024 she was shortlisted for RBC’s Emerging Indigenous Filmmaker’s Award. She is currently in a production mentorship with Cinema Ascent and is writing a documentary about the spiritual gifts of autism. Julianna has future plans to bridge arts, therapy, and culture to help people heal. Ep. 45 - Autism Mythbusting, Misdiagnosis, & Math Brains

Ep. 45 - Autism Mythbusting, Misdiagnosis, & Math Brains Your trio of hosts -- Kara, Maja, and Bruce -- discuss the myths that most bother them about autism and their own experiences of emotions processing, empathy, and rejection sensitivity and/or resistance to compliments. Maja makes excellent points about the need for professionals to stay current in the knowledge about presentations of autism (e.g., internalized and externalized) and implications for the school system are discussed. Ep. 44 - Countries, Concussions, & Kinship (with Jason Leaver)

Ep. 44 - Countries, Concussions, & Kinship (with Jason Leaver) In this episode, Kara, Maja, and Bruce talk about the diagnostic process and personal impact on guest Jason Leaver, a professional filmmaker and video game designer - who is also Kara's pseudo cousin! They discuss medical ableism and common misconceptions about autism, the journey of reconceptualizing one's life and self in light of their autistic identity, and the liberatory benefits of learning about one's own needs. The group also chats about travel, media representations of autism, and more. Some fun tangents include Bruce's recent commission, waterbeds, and Kara's ad lib in a horror film! GUEST BIO: Jason Leaver is a graduate of TMU’s School of Image Arts film program, and an award-winning writer/creator with nearly 30 years of experience as a storyteller in motion arts. Finding innovative ways to tell stories has led to Jason establishing himself as a skilled and award-winning writer, director, and editor. In more recent years, he’s become a successful video game developer (Trash Panda), and is eager to see what kind of stories he can tell with interactive mediums.
