Something In The Air: Unearthing THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
"You know, I don't even think Curt has a cousin" In this episode of Ahh! You Scared Me, Mike and Katie venture deep into the forest to review the 2011 meta-horror masterpiece, The Cabin in the Woods. From pheromone-induced bad decisions to the meticulous bureaucracy of a monster-filled lab, the duo breaks down why this film is the ultimate love letter to the horror genre. Hosts: Mike Woodhams, Katie Long Director: Drew Goddard Cast: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Sigourney Weaver Mike kicks off the discussion by highlighting the strong connection to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, noting that the underground lab feels like a direct evolution of 'The Initiative' seen in the show's fourth season. This lab serves as the hub for a global ritual where archetypes—specifically the Whore, the Athlete, the Scholar, the Fool, and the Virgin—are chemically manipulated through pheromones and hair dye to ensure they play their roles for the Ancient Gods living beneath the earth. The pair dives into the meticulously organized bureaucracy of the lab, focusing on the iconic whiteboard betting pool where technicians gamble on which nightmare will be released, ranging from the Zombie Redneck Torture Family to the Sugarplum Fairy and a surprisingly lethal unicorn. They analyze the tension building as the characters explore the basement, eventually triggering the ritual by reading from a Latin diary—a move Mike and Katie agree is the ultimate "why did they do that" moment. As the episode reaches its climax, they discuss the System Purge, where every monster in the catalog is released to slaughter the lab staff, and the final confrontation with the Director, played by Sigourney Weaver. Ultimately, Mike and Katie debate whether the true villains are the ancient gods or the indifferent office workers who treat world-ending sacrifices like a mundane 9-to-5 job.
