Alex Murdaugh's Retrial Has a New Missing-Gun Claim

Alex Murdaugh is headed back to trial, and the missing murder weapons are now at the center of a new discovery fight. His lawyers filed a September 30 motion asking the court to compel production of records from an investigation into allegations that local police may have handled or moved evidence after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed. The defense motion relies on reporting about a state grand-jury inquiry involving Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander and another officer. Alexander was present at Moselle on June 7, 2021, but he has not been charged. His attorney denies the allegations. The defense wants the underlying witness statements and investigative material so it can determine whether the reported claims affect the State's original theory of what happened to the weapons. Meanwhile, prosecutors say the defense is overstating a separate discovery dispute. After Murdaugh's lawyers demanded full cellphone extraction files, the State responded that all cellphone records in its possession had already been turned over during discovery for the 2023 trial. That issue is scheduled to be part of an October 16 evidentiary hearing. The fight sits beside older forensic problems that are already part of the record. Maggie's cellphone location history was overwritten after recovery, according to appellate filings. Confirmatory testing of stains on Alex Murdaugh's shirt found no human blood. A low-level male DNA contribution that excluded Alex and Paul was found beneath Maggie's fingernails, and further testing was authorized in August 2026. The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh's murder convictions in May 2026. The retrial is scheduled for April 5, 2027, in Sumter County. The next phase is no longer just about what happened at Moselle. It is also about what evidence survived the first investigation and what a second jury will be allowed to see. • The Re-Trial Of Alex Murdaugh

Alex Murdaugh Says the State Withheld WHAT?!

Alex Murdaugh's retrial has opened a new battle over evidence that never made it into the first trial. His defense is demanding records tied to allegations that local law-enforcement officers may have handled the missing guns used to kill Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. The State has not adopted those allegations, and the officer most prominently named in the reporting denies them. The September 30 motion asks for grand-jury material, witness interviews and investigative files concerning the alleged movement or concealment of weapons and clothing. It focuses in part on Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander, a Murdaugh family friend who was at Moselle the night of the killings. No murder weapon has ever been recovered. At the same time, prosecutors are rejecting the defense's claim that it lacks crucial cellphone evidence. The State says it already produced the cellphone material in its possession during discovery before the 2023 trial. The defense says it needs the underlying extraction files so its own experts can independently test the timeline rather than rely on the State's summaries. There are also established forensic disputes that do not depend on any new allegation. Defense appellate filings say Maggie's phone lost location data after it was recovered. Trial testimony showed confirmatory testing found no human blood on the tested stains from Alex's white T-shirt. Analysts identified a small amount of male DNA under Maggie's fingernails that excluded Alex and Paul, and a judge has now allowed additional testing. Murdaugh's original murder convictions were overturned in May 2026. His new trial is set for April 5, 2027, in Sumter County. Before that jury hears a word, the court must decide which evidence disputes are real discovery failures, which are newly testable facts, and which remain allegations.
