Bonus Lesson 2: The Patchwork Mind

We tend to assume that when a better theory arrives, it replaces the one before. Minds, and science, mostly don't work that way. Bonus Lesson 2: The Patchwork Mind asks what a concept actually is, and examines where the major theories of concepts fall short. Then it shows what a mind does when its models disagree. It doesn't patch them into one master model. It keeps them all, each bounded to where it holds, and lets context choose. That's how a child holds three explanations of gravity, how the most ambitious attempt ever made to encode human commonsense knowledge was forced to organize itself, and, as philosopher Nancy Cartwright has argued, how physics itself may be built. 🎧 Apple Podcasts or Spotify — search The Functional Mind 📖 thefunctionalmind.substack.com Music by Brylie Christopher – full credits: Solo Brylie Christopher - Solo - Free Music Archive This is a public episode.
