AI agents don't need malicious intent—or an attacker steering them—to produce behavior that looks like lying, cheating, leaking data, or escaping. We give them open-ended goals and broad tools, but only a fraction of the constraints a human worker implicitly brings to the same job. The result is an "escape surface": technically reachable paths beyond the mandate that nobody explicitly ruled out. The problem isn't always that the agent broke the rules. Often, we never encoded the boundary.
