Charlemagne

Charlemagne rose from Frankish prince to king, conqueror and emperor, creating a realm that stretched across much of western and central Europe. His long reign included the conquest of the Lombards, decades of war against the Saxons, campaigns against the Avars and the establishment of new frontiers in Spain.
