What's changed since 0.1.1
5 min readFour releases, one new news desk, and a long list of things that were quietly wrong.
Welcome to the brand-new podnod news desk! We've rolled out four updates since version 0.1.1, so we're bundling them all into this one post. Everything below is a change you can see or hear.
Note: The website changes are already live, and the app updates will arrive with your next download.
Listening
- Continuous play actually continues. Letting an episode finish used to unfairly send you back to the top of your list, or worse, mark the rest of your list as played without actually playing it. Fixed everywhere.
- Resume right where you left off. Picking an episode back up won't play a split-second of the beginning before jumping to your spot anymore.
- Smarter device handoffs. When you switch from one device to another, your "Up Next" queue and your playback speed come with you.
- True cross-device playback speed. If you listen at 1.5× on your phone, it won't drop back to 1× when you open your laptop. (Note: If your speed recently reset, you'll need to set it one last time so we can lock it in!)
- No phantom "Pick up" prompts. We only offer to resume an episode if there is actually something left to listen to.
- Episode lengths are always visible. Even after you've finished an episode, you'll still see its duration (e.g.,
Saturday · 51 min · Played). Downloads also show the duration right next to the file size.
Your Library
- "New" actually means new to you. The "new" badge now only counts unheard episodes published after you subscribed, instead of throwing the entire back-catalog at you.
- Accurate show counts. The numbers finally match up everywhere. Plus, filtering a massive archive by Unplayed now searches the entire show, not just the first page.
- "Mark all as played" means ALL. It marks everything across all your devices, rather than stopping at the device in your hand.
- Inbox cleanup. We added a Mark all as read button for your inbox, which is perfect for when you haven't opened it in months. (Just scrolling through won't mark things as read).
- Stubborn sync errors are gone. Those pesky errors that refused to clear have been squashed.
Finding Things
- Better charts and discovery. We fixed the ranking logic so shows with massive audiences actually outrank smaller ones. The front page and discovery shelves are now based on real listening signals.
- Redesigned show pages. We've packed in everything you need: average episode length, publish frequency, chart position, publisher support links, and a search box. You can also queue or download episodes right from the list. Available on web, desktop, and phone.
- Transcripts! They now appear for shows that previously had them missing.
On the Website
- Stay where you are. Hitting Subscribe, Notify, or Add to Queue on a show page won't awkwardly pop the player open over what you're reading anymore.
- Smarter sign-ins. Logging in now drops you exactly where you were, instead of forcing you into the player.
- Smoother account management. We fixed bugs with the authenticator setup, invisible code boxes, and password confirmation hiccups. Adding a passkey is smoother now, too.
- Faster loading. The website is noticeably snappier, especially on heavy, busy pages.
Notifications & Privacy
- A true master switch for notifications. Turn off podnod's notifications, and we mean it: absolute silence for that device. Your inbox will still catch everything quietly.
- New episode alerts. They actually arrive now!
- Painless problem reporting. There's a new form right inside the app. No account needed, all fields optional, and you can attach screenshots. (Opt-in error reporting is also there, strictly anonymous, and off by default).
- Human-readable error messages. If something breaks, we'll tell you what happened and what to do about it, leaving the technical jargon for our own developer logs.
How It Looks
- Pick your color. Choose from seven new accents: paper (the classic monochrome), blush, apricot, butter, mint, sky, and lilac. Or, choose mix for a fresh color every time you open the app!
- Smarter pop-up notices. Self-dismissing messages now feature a little countdown ring that pauses when you look at it or interact with the screen. Taking a phone call won't cost you an undo button anymore.
- Lots of little polish. Better headers on small screens, video controls moved off the picture, scrolling player panes, a mini-player that actually shows titles, long show names that no longer break the layout, and your library finally opening exactly where you'd expect.
Speed & Battery
- Massive battery savings. Listening with your screen off now uses about a third of the battery it used to!
- Faster resumes. Opening the app snaps to your real listening position much faster.
- Desktop crashes fixed. We solved an issue where a show followed on another device could crash your desktop app on launch. Crash screens also now have a Copy details button so you can easily send us the report.
And Finally... This Page!
podnod finally has a dedicated place for release notes. You're reading the new news desk at /news. Every post has a stable link, and there's an RSS feed at /news/feed.xml if you prefer a reader.
If you have an account, you can opt-in to get an alert when we post here. It's one click to subscribe, and if you ever unsubscribe, we completely wipe the record rather than just marking it.
Noticing something mentioned above isn't working quite right? The fastest way to let us know is the new Report a problem form in the app. It automatically attaches your platform, version, and the screen you were on so we can fix it fast.
